HON. SHEILA KAWAMARA-MISHAMBI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EASSI
Sheila Kawamara-Mishambi is the Executive Director of the Eastern African Sub-Regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI). She is a gender and development specialist and a feminist activist with over 25 years of expertise in leadership, gender and human rights and peace and conflict resolution. She was a former Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from November 2001 to November 2006. Before joining the regional parliament she was the Executive Director of Uganda Women’s Network (UWONET), a teacher of Economics in Trinity College Nabbingo and a journalist with the New Vision Newspaper in Kampala. Kawamara-Mishambi is also a private entrepreneur and an Alumni of the Cherie Blair Foundation. She holds a Masters of Arts in Development Studies, Politics of Alternative Development Strategies from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands; a Bachelors of Arts with Education degree from Makerere University, Kampala and a Post-Graduate, Diploma in Journalism from the Uganda Management Institute in Kampala. She has also got several post graduate qualifications in International Policy Advocacy, Gender, Human Rights and Organisational Development. She has done various consultancies in Uganda and internationally and written various publications, including the development of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 National Action Plans for the Governments of Uganda and South Sudan.
