GEOGRAPHY
Republic of Ethiopia, is a country situated in Eastern Africa. Apart from Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia is bordered by Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Djibouti to the northeast, and Somalia to the east. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in the world and Africa's second-most populous nation. It has yielded some of the oldest traces of humanity, making it an important area in the process of human evolution. In 2006, the population was estimated at 75,067,000.
GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS
“Women represent 21.9% in politics”
Politics of Ethiopia takes place in a framework of a federal parliamentary republic, whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government. Executive power is exercised by the government. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament. The Judiciary is more or less independent of the executive and the legislature. The election of Ethiopia's 547-member constituent assembly was held in June 1994. This assembly adopted the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in December 1994.
EASSI members are Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations ( NEWA) and Christian Relief Development Association (CRDA).
NEWA is a non-profit, non-governmental organization. The constituent members are various associations whose primary focus is working on women centred issues. For more information, visit http://www.newa.info.

Together with EASSI, NEWA and CRDA have contributed to the women’s movement by playing active advocacy roles against Female Genital Mutilation, training women in various socio-economic areas of expertise and also monitoring the critical areas of Beijing platforms for Action |
