Womens Rights and Gender Equality

This Programme area involves lobbying for the East African Declaration on Gender Equality (EADGE) (bringing together all legally binding international commitments to gender equality including but not limited to the Beijing Platform for Action, CEDAW, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa and the Millennium Development Goals) into one regional Instrument, through research and analysis, lobbying and advocacy, and empowerment of women.

From 1-12 March 2010, government officials and representatives of civil society, the media and the private sector will meet at UN Headquarters in New York during the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, to assess what has been achieved since the Beijing Conference, share experiences and good practices and discuss priority actions to deal with persistent obstacles and new challenges.
