  • Burundi

    It is a small country in the Great Lakes region of Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda on the north, Tanzania on the south and east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west. Although the country is landlocked, much of its western border is adjacent to Lake Tanoanvika, The country's modem name is derived from its Bantu language, kirundi.   • Eritrea

    Eritrea is a country situated in Eastern Africa. It is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The east and northeast of the country have an extensive coastline on the Red Sea, directly across from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands are part of Eritrea. The population by 2005 was estimated by 4,401,000.
    Eritrea was consolidated into a colony by the Italian government on January 1, 1890. Upon Italy's losses in World War II, Eritrea was ruled as a British protectorate between 1941 and 1952. Like the economies of many other African nations, the economy is largely based on subsistence agriculture, with 80% of the population involved in farming and herding. The only natural disaster that sometimes affects Eritrea, drought, has often created trouble in the farming areas.

     

  • Ethiopia

    Republic of Ethiopia, is a country situated in Easterm Africa. Apart from Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia is bordered by Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Djibouti to the northeast, and Somalia to the east. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in the world and Africa's second-most populous nation. It has yielded some of the oldest traces or humanity, making it an important area in the process of human evolution. In 2006, the population was estimated at 75,067,000.

     

  • Kenya

    The Republic of Kenya is a country in Eastern Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the north, somalia to the northeast, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and sudan to the northwest, with the Indian ocean running along the southeast border. Kenya’s current President is Mwai Kibaki who came to power for another term after the disputed elections in December 2007, Raila odinga is the Prime Minister and was sworn into power after an agreed power sharing following the elections that left thousands of Kenyans dead.

    It was during this time that EAssI led a Regional women's Peace Initiative in Nairobi to mediate. They also raised awareness over the escalating violence impacted on the women and children from the violence. EAssI’s focal point in Kenya is Caucus for women in Leadership http://www.kwpcaucus.org/, and the member organisation is women's Rights Awareness Programme (wRAP). EAssI's board member from Kenya is Deborah Okumu. This strategic partnership has led to many successes in the women’s movement in the region. Amongst the more recent was the women's Peace initiative held in Nairobi in 2008 after the post-eledtion violence in Kenya. EAsSI, withmembers from the region, deliberated on forging a concreet way forward to mediate durign the crisis. Many atrocities were felt in the region and many were left untold and unheard. The burden of conflict on women and girls is almost always left for the women to bear in silence. EAssI , together with partners from the region, was able to highlight many of the victims' plight dunng this time and with the mediation team, raise more awareness on the impact of the crisis.

     

  • Rwanda

    The Republic of Rwanda is a small landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of east-central Africa, bordered by Uganda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Conao and Tanzania. Rwanda supports the densest human populations in continental Africa, According to a 2005 report, there are approximately 7.6 million people. nhe small country bears the title Land of a Thousand Hills.” .EAsSt members in Rwanda are Profemme These Hamwe and swAA Rwanda. Profemmefrwese Hamwe is a collective network for women&CTMs organisations. hey have over 50 organisations since 2006.

     

  • Somalia

    Somali Republic, formerly known as the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of Africa in East Africa. It is bordered by Diibouti to the northwest, Kenya on its southwest, the Gulf of Aden with Yemen on its north, the Indian Ocean at its east and Ethiopia to the west. Somalia gained its independence from Italy on 1 July 12tQ. On the same day, it united with British Somaliland. In 2007, the population was estimated at 9,118,773

     

  • Tanzania
    United Republic of Taiizaiiia is a country in East Africa bordered by Kenya and Uganda on the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambigue on the south. To the east it borders the Indian Ocean. The country is named after Tanganyika, its mainland part, and the Zanzibar islands off its east coast. Tanganyika united with Zanzibar in 1964, forming the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which later the same year was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania. ln November 2006, the population was estimated at 37,849,133. Elections for president and all National Assembly seats were held in December 2005 where His Excellency Jakaya Kikwete was elected.
  • Uganda

    The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa, bordered on the east by Kenya, the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania, The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, within which it shares borders with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a portion of the south of the country including the capital Kampala. According to the 2002 Population census, the population is 27,616,000
