Based on the article below, the Democratic Republic of Congo is currently the venue of both celebration and scandal, in regard to women’s sexual rights. It’s rather ironic that a couple of weeks after the ratification of the African Union Protocol on Women’s Rights, Goma, a large town located in the north eastern part of the country played host to a ghastly act, a painful violation of women’s sexual rights, a barefaced mockery of the recent ratification. Once again, women were subjected to rape by fellow male prisoners who had been convicted of rape, among other hard core crimes. The prison is apparently in very poor condition but even then, this act is not justifiable in any way. EASSI is adding her strong voice to that of the Women’s Movement to condemn this inhuman act and calls for IMMEDIATE domestication and implementation of the Protocol in the absence of which, the sexual and other rights of women will remain a myth in the country. We call upon the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to bring these perpetrators to book and ensure the safety, security and wellbeing of the women inmates by proving them with proper medical and psychosocial support.  This is the minimum demand.
